work in progress of myself trying to introduce to the world...
My name is Zebu Kluth, born 1962, married since 2000. I live with my wife Katharina in a 3-room-flat in a house in Berlin-Kreuzberg, which was built around 1910. From the beginnig of the eighties until the end I studied german Language and Theatre in West-Berlin. So I live for more or less 10 years in the reunited and 10 years in the two-half-Berlin.
Zebu is a nickname from a techoslovacian (or perhaps french?) TV-Soap. There was a figure called Zebulon, which was jumping when it appeared on the screen and since I was jumping a lot in the seventies I was called Zebulon and the „lon“ was lost some time later. For our african friends: there is not any connection to your cows. I once tried to talk to a Zebu at the Berlin Zoo, but it didn’t recognise me as a friend.
After my studies I worked at Hebbel-Theatre here in Berlin, than co-founded sophiensaele, our project partner theatre, then was 5 years artistic director of Theater am Halleschen Ufer. Last summer I was thrown out there and since I was very frustrated with the impossibility of developing independant theatre in Berlin I tried to find some other job somehow far away from theatre. I was lucky and met the trickypeople, of whom Ralf developed this site and now I work with them on media projects and media design.
In 1962, the year I was born, we had the highest rate of birth in West-Germany since 2. World War. The specific of my generation is, that we grew up in the most richest, most liberal society. And on the other hand, the 1962ers have the lowest rate of „important persons“. I think this has something to do with this liberal and free and rich society, in which we grew up. There was no reason to become somehow famous, because we never had to fight for anything und everything was easy for us.
And I think, that being not important, being so in the middle, not rich not poor, not fish nor flesh makes my generation very important for a society, since we bring some kind of stability into it. Deep inside of me I still trust in a completely naive way in the state as someone, who is on my side and someone who will help me, when I have a problem. I trust in social security.
And I realise, that this is a dream of society that is coming to an end (that was perhaps a european dream of society of the 70ies). I see more and more new problems in our society. I see that we loose most of our social security system, that is running out of money. I see, that in a certain way, my idea of a liberal state is an idea from the last century.
Hans Magnus Enzensberger, a famous german writer, wrote some years ago about the boredom we all felt in the beginning of the eighties, when we all had this „no future“-syndrom, that in europe in the 70ies all ideas of the french revolution fulfilled themselves. Egalite, fraternite bla bla... and so the base of all european developement disapperared. Like a long distance runner who comes to the end of the race. He womits a little and feels very weak. (I don’t know if a long distance runner feels like this since a don’t like sports.)
My wife Katharina often says I am like a priest. And she is true in the way that I always try to find a deeper sense in everything. I deeply believe that mankind is good from birth and that every evil in the world comes from a society that produces it by giving the people not enough freedom, chances, education, love.
To be continued...
